Description:

Schools of Mini Robofish Swim Where Humans Can’t

They look like plastic bath toys, but scientists say these tiny new robotic fish mimic the swimming style of real bass or tuna and can maneuver into crevices too small for traditional underwater autonomous vehicles.

Schools of the mini robofish could be used to detect pollution or inspect underwater structures such as sunken boats and submerged oil pipes. Unlike other models of robotic fish, which are several feet long and contain hundreds or thousands of parts, the new five-to-eight–inch prototypes have only 10 components and cost just a few hundred dollars each.

“The main drawback of traditional robots is that they have way too many parts and are very complex,” said mechanical engineer Pablo Alvarado of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who helped design the fish. “Traditional robots may work in the lab, but if you take them into a regular environment, like the ocean, they wouldn’t last more than a half hour.”

Alvarado and colleagues wanted to try a simpler approach to robot design. Instead of patching together multiple mechanical parts, they built each fish using a single piece of soft, flexible polymer. After assembling the motor inside a special fish-shaped mold, they poured liquid polymer around the mold and let it solidify. That means there’s no chance of water seeping in between separate parts and ruining the motor in the fish’s belly, Alvarado said.

“These materials are very resilient,” he said. “Water can’t do much to them and they can survive very high temperatures. Unless another fish eats them, they could go on and on.”

Inside each robot’s midsection, a motor generates a wave that travels along the polymer body and propels the fish forward. By varying the stiffness of the material along the length of the robot, researchers can control the vibration of the fish’s body and mimic swimming motions of bass, trout or tuna.

Real fish can swim at speeds up to 10 times their body length per second. So far, the robofish can only go about one body length per second, but researchers say that’s still a lot faster than previous models. For now, the fish are also tethered to a power source, but the scientists hope to release a battery-powered version in the near future.

Given the resilience and low cost of the robofish, the researchers think they’ll be ideal for long-term monitoring of ports or underwater Navy exploration. But Alvarado says he doesn’t want to stop at fish.

“From our perspective, the fish were really just one application,” he said. “We wanted to prove that our idea works, that we could make robots from a compliant body and then apply a little force to control the vibrations and mimic motion in nature.”

But compared to other types of animal locomotion, Alvarado says the movement of a swimming fish is pretty simple. Next he wants to tackle something more complicated, such as a scuttling salamander or a gliding manta ray.

Intel, Microsoft event to highlight Windows 7 improvements

Intel and Microsoft will hold an event next week to discuss collaboration on improvements to Windows 7.

The event, on September 1 in San Francisco, will "share how the two companies collaborated on key enhancements during the development of Windows 7," according to Intel. Steve Smith, vice president and director, Intel's Digital Enterprise Group Operations, and Michael Angiulo, general manager of Windows Planning and PC Ecosystem at Microsoft, will talk at the event. Microsoft plans to launch Windows 7 on October 22 .

Windows 7 collaboration will be demonstrated by engineers from both companies, according to Intel. Not surprisingly, Microsoft is working closely with Intel, whose chips will power the vast majority of PCs running Windows 7.

In a blog posted in July, Intel described how Microsoft and Intel "saw unique opportunities to optimize Windows 7 for Intel processor technology" in the areas of performance, power management, and graphics.

The blog discusses improvements to multitasking based on "SMT Parking," which provides additional support to the Windows 7 scheduler for Intel Hyper-threading Technology. With Hyper-threading, the operating system sees a single processor core as two cores (i.e., a dual-core chip becomes a virtual quad-core processor), thus potentially improving multitasking--or doing tasks (threads) simultaneously.

In addition, improvements over Vista for boot and shutdown times have been implemented during the Windows 7 development cycle, according to the blog.

And on Intel's Web site, the chipmaker lists desktop motherboards and associated drivers that have passed logo certification for Windows 7.

Another beneficiary of improved Windows 7 technology: Intel solid-state drives, which are typically faster than hard-disk drives and gaining ground in niche markets such as high-end laptops, gaming PCs, and servers. SSDs will be able to take advantage of Windows 7 technology called the Trim Command. Trim will allow blocks of data to be freed up for reuse to better maintain the performance of the SSD.

Windows 7 will also do more than previous operating systems with graphics via DirectX 11. Advanced Micro Devices has described DirectX 11-related technology that enables games developers to create smoother, less blocky and more organic looking objects in games. And, beyond games, Windows 7 has the potential to turn a graphics processing unit (GPU) from AMD or Nvidia into a general-purpose compute engine, used to accelerate everyday computing tasks like a central processing unit, or CPU. Specifically, "the compute shader" can be used to speed up more common computing tasks. The buzz word used to describe this technology is a mouthful: GPGPU or general-purpose graphics processing unit.

Movable Prosthetics: The Biomechanical Interface

Researchers continue to investigate ways in which medical technology might one day provide people who are missing limbs with prosthetics that can be more accurately controlled and that provide some measure of sensory feedback. For now, however, developments are still in their very early stages.

The woman who can feel roughness or smoothness in her artificial hands for the first time in years; the child whose artificial leg lengthens as he grows; the previously armless man who can reach into a cabinet above his head to prepare dinner; machines that will some day register sensations in much the same way that people can -- thanks to research that will culminate this year in a major set of new designs, procedures and prototypes for artificial limbs, some of these miracles might eventually become commonplace, perhaps in another generation.

For now, a big payoff of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 project -- a multi-year push to develop new prosthetic limbs -- is a breathtaking set of advances in human-machine interfaces, control technology, and implantation techniques.

However, the most important advances of the program just might be the lessons learned and the infrastructure laid down in figuring out how to focus the skills of thousands of researchers -- working on everything from nerve chemistry to software engineering -- on one single goal: Build a working, lifelike arm that users can control to do everything from picking up a piece of paper to drinking a toast with a delicate crystal glass.

DARPA will soon have a set of 2009 prototypes fueled by years of research spanning chemistry, biology, computer science, cognition, engineering and physics. Dean Kamen, of Segway fame, has lumped some of this technology together into the optimistically named "Luke Arm," a reference to "Star Wars" character Luke Skywalker's artificial limb, which Kamen's company eventually wants to bring to market.

While most researchers say that a true production version of the "Luke Arm" is many years away, the advances fueled by the project are promising not only to revolutionize prosthetics, but to enhance medicine and electronics in many new ways.

Building the Biomechanical Interface

Central to many of the problems involved in prosthetics is the bioelectronic interface, where nerves and muscle must establish connections with silicon and metal. Researchers eventually want to be able to send signals back and forth between brain and prosthesis, prompting advances in "targeted muscle reinnervation," a surgical technique that transfers patients' working nerves to alternative muscle sites, where they produce myoelectrical signals -- basically, muscle electronics -- that can be measured and used to communicate with prosthetics.

Pioneered by a team led by Todd Kuiken, a doctor working at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago's Neural Engineering Center for Artificial Limbs, the technique is now available to the public. Scientists hope to use the resulting signals to control prosthetic arms, giving researchers hope that eventually, the technique can be generalized and customized enough to provide support for commercially viable artificial limbs.

"There's been so much work in implanted myoelectric signals for prosthetics," says Gerald Loeb, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Southern California. "It has really brought together a lot of people who were working in separate areas," he told TechNewsWorld.

However, despite wondrous advances, most researchers say that the current state of the art is as far from the idealized concept of the "Luke Arm" as the Wright Brothers' first flights at Kitty Hawk are from today's commercial aviation. "We've had a great deal of experience with reinnervation -- more than 30 procedures where people have been fitted with limbs and virtual systems," said Stuart Harshbarger, biomedicine team leader at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory and project manager for DARPA's prosthetic push.

"But we're just starting to get substantial field data about how these limbs work, so we can adjust and improve them with better feedback," he told TechNewsWorld. "And in the real world," he said, "every prosthetic and every patient is unique, so that data is really important if we're going to find solutions that are customizable for each person's situation."

Blurring the Lines Between Circuitry and Humanity

Of course, one way to deal with the interface between biological systems and electronics is to blur the distinction by making the electronic circuitry "more biological." That's the focus of a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory project that might eventually have an impact on prosthetics.

"The problem we have to solve is that the biological interface is chemical, and the prosthetic is electro-mechanical and relies on fields and currents," University of California Merced Associate Professor of Biochemistry Aleksandr Noy told TechNewsWorld. "We can do some translation between them now, but if the prosthetic could sense an actual chemical release -- the signal itself -- it would be much better and more precise," he said.

Noy's work involves sealing arrays of silicon nanowire transistors within fatty membrane molecules. Using the same fatty membranes that nature uses to encase cells, Noy's technique encases the silicon-based electronics, raising the possibility that eventually, such nanowires might be used to communicate with living tissue. Already, they are more compatible with the body's natural systems than the silicon nanowires themselves, which change their electrical properties if left unprotected and exposed to the body's natural acidic and basic material.

Though excited about the technology's possibilities, Noy remains cautious about predictions that his research will be incorporated into working prosthetics anytime soon. "There's still a lot of work that needs to be done," he said. "We still have to make [the technology] compatible with implantation in the body, and we have to make it smaller." Also, he added, "the chemicals that the body uses [to create, transmit and receive signals] have a short life, especially in the body, so our solutions have to get more stable before they could ever be used medically."

In the near term, probably of the biggest areas for more prosthetic research is in extending the small amount of feedback for a few sources of signals that can be collected and processed today -- roughness, temperature and pressure -- to deal with the full range of many types of information.

"We really hope that some of the sensory research on feedback to the peripheral nerves will mature to where we can take much more information from artificial hands," Harshbarger said. "There are at least 80 different types of information coming from the human hand, and we can now begin to handle just a few of them. When we can handle a more complete set of inputs, just think how drastically this will change how people accept and think of their limb integrations."

In the end, the success of DARPA's efforts might depend more on innovations in business models and open software engineering than in pure medical research.

Apple to Set Snow Leopard Loose Friday

Confirming weeks of speculation, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) announced on Monday that OS X 10.6, better known as "Snow Leopard," will be available starting Aug. 28.

Snow Leopard, which Apple is touting as a refinement to its predecessor, named "Leopard," was originally scheduled to be released in September.

Could the launch date have been moved up following a survey suggesting students prefer netbooks and Windows laptops to Macs?

Rumors and Innuendo

At its World Wide Developers Conference, held in San Francisco in June, Apple announced that Snow Leopard would be released in September. However, rumors that Apple would release Snow Leopard in late August persisted.

On Aug. 11, the MacRumors blog quoted French blog Mac4Ever as saying Snow Leopard had achieved "Golden Master" status, meaning an operating system has been finalized and is ready to be released to manufacturing, which is when it is cut onto CDs, labeled and packed ready for shipping.

On Aug. 12, the blog Daring Fireball blog pegged Snow Leopard's release date as Aug. 28, while AppleInsider said rumors were the upgrade would hit the shelves Aug. 24.

Snow Leopard Specs

Snow Leopard consists of enhancements to Mac OS X 10.5 to make it run more quickly and support Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Exchange, a move that could lay the groundwork for its further penetration into the enterprise. Snow Leopard only runs on Intel-based Macs, which means older PowerPC boxes are out.

Apple has rewritten the Finder in Cocoa to take advantage of the modern technologies in Mac OS X, including 64-bit support. Expose, which lays out overlapping windows into an organized thumbnail view, has a new look and is integrated into the Dock.

The Dock gives users quick access to their most frequently used applications, files and folders. It is pre-loaded with icons for many Mac apps, including Dashboard, Mail, iCal and iPhoto.

Snow Leopard offers out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, so users can access Exchange services such as e-mail, calendars and Global Address Lists directly from their Macs instead of having to go through Microsoft Outlook.

Cupertino's Fifth Column

"Every day is 'bring your Mac to work' day," reads a message on Apple's Web page for Snow Leopard. Cupertino also points out that out-of-the-box support for Exchange Server 2007 is "something even Windows PCs don't have."

These statements fit right into Cupertino's indirect attacks on the enterprise market.

"Apple has traditionally let its rabid base of consumer enthusiasts evangelize and proselytize for it in the enterprise," said Laura DiDio, principal at ITIC. "That strategy has worked particular well in the past three years with the debut of the ... iPhone."

By offering support for Exchange Server 2007 and charging only $29 for upgrading to Snow Leopard, Apple is further removing the barriers to IT approving Macs for use in the enterprise, DiDio told MacNewsWorld.

School Kids Switch Sides So Easily

Despite having worked the education market for years, Apple has seen demand fall in the education market this year. During its second quarter earnings call, COO Tim Cook blamed the recession for this and expressed doubt that things would turn around in the third quarter.

He may be right: A survey of more than 300 visitors to consumers electronics marketplace Retrevo's Web site indicated that students are opting for Windows-based computers instead of the more expensive Macs.

The survey found that 34 percent of students buying laptops plan to get netbooks, and another 49 percent plan to purchase full-sized PCs. "At a time when many people are experiencing economic hardship, having a new Apple laptop isn't a necessity," Retrevo CEO Vipin Jain said in a statement.

The study, results of which were released earlier this month, was conducted by Gadgetology on a random sampling of more than 300 of Retrevo's 4 million monthly visitors throughout the United States. The visitors were distributed across age gender, income and location.

Trying to Upstage Windows 7?

Could Apple have pushed up the release date for Snow Leopard to try and offset this?

That's possible, Gartner (NYSE: IT) analyst Charles Smulders told MacNewsWorld. "I think Apple would like as much of its installed base to upgrade before Windows 7 is released to ensure the most favorable comparisons," he explained.

Windows 7 has received generally favorable reviews and could threaten Apple's sales, Pund-IT Research's Charles King told MacNewsWorld. "Microsoft and its OEMs offer of free Windows 7 upgrades for recently purchased PCs and notebooks is likely to take a bit out of Apple's opportunities," he said.

Nokia Nudges Into Netbook Territory With New Booklet 3G

The new device, featuring integrated GPS and a claimed 12-hour battery life, will be formally unveiled Sept. 2 at Nokia World, the company's annual expo.

The netbook, to be called the "Booklet 3G," will likely be sold through telecommunications retailers, leveraging Nokia's strong relationships in those channels to market the device as an extension of the mobile lifestyle, Gartner (NYSE: IT) PC industry analyst Ranjit Atwal told TechNewsWorld.

The big question is price. Most netbooks retail for less than US$500. Nokia hasn't announced the price of the Booklet 3G, but Atwal has doubts it will hit the prevailing price point.

"It looks like more of a highly valued, premium mini-notebook," he said.

Meet the Booklet

Nokia hasn't released full specs on the device, saving that for its big party in Stuttgart, Germany, next week. However, here's what we do know: It will weigh 2.75 pounds, will be wrapped in an aluminum chassis and will include an HDMI port, an integrated video camera, Bluetooth and an SD card reader.

The netbook will include an integrated 3G modem and WiFi.

It will also be set up to take advantage of Nokia's Ovi service, which allows users to access and sync music and data between the netbook, the user's mobile phone and a Web-based platform.

One of the key claims is battery life. The claim of 12 hours of unplugged computing power would put the device into a class of its own, Atwal said. However, it's too soon to know if those claims will really pan out, as battery-life claims are notoriously inexact.

Back to the PC

The device will be Nokia's first computer since it sold its consumer electronics division in 1991 to direct its attention to mobile phones.

The company still dominates that worldwide arena with 38 percent of the global handset market and 41 percent of the smartphone market, according to Nokia financial data. However, the company is facing sliding revenues from its core products and increasing competition in the smartphone market.

The company has been upfront with investors about its plans to expand its horizons into convergent devices that marry the communications capabilities of wireless phones with the computing capabilities of laptop computers.

To that end, Nokia likely will restrict itself to the mobility segment of the PC market -- meaning we're unlikely to see Nokia-branded desktops or even larger laptops designed as desktop replacements, Atwal said.

Netbooks have been one of the few relative bright spots in the tech sector this year. Gartner expects 21 million units to be shipped this year, rising to 30 million in 2010. Research firm ABI is even more bullish, forecasting 35 million units shipped in 2009, growing to 139 million in 2013.

Nokia Collaborating With PC Industry Giants

The Booklet 3G is likely not Nokia's last foray into the field, however.

Earlier this month, Nokia also announced a research deal with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) designed to lead to mobile products based on Nokia's Symbian mobile OS but featuring Microsoft business solutions.

In June, the company announced a research deal with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) meant to foster innovation in the mobile internet device field.

The Booklet is likely an early outgrowth of that collaboration, said Flint Pulskamp, wireless semiconductor analyst for IDC Research.

"This is what I expected," Pulskamp told TechNewsWorld.

Intel controls the netbook market with its energy-efficient Atom processor, and its deal with Nokia made quickly developing such a product more feasible, Pulskamp said.

Microsoft dials up emerging-market phone push

Microsoft on Monday announced plans for mobile software that aims to allow people in emerging markets to access various Internet programs using lower-end feature phones.

The software, known as OneApp, is due out later this year and should allow people in emerging markets to access services like Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger using the kinds of inexpensive phones most often sold for $20 or $30. Microsoft said Blue Label Telecoms in South Africa will be the first to use OneApp and will use it to offer phones that ship with a dozen mobile applications, including a mobile wallet program as well as the social-networking tools.

While not an operating system, OneApp is a software environment within which many kinds of programs can run. The key to OneApp, Microsoft said, is the fact that the applications and data run largely from the cloud. That means that OneApp can run on phones with rather meager memory and processing abilities. OneApp itself takes up only about 150 kilobytes of memory, as opposed to the many megabytes often used on programs for smartphones. Individual applications can be as small as 10 to 15 kilobytes.

"When you launch an application, (OneApp) only loads the part of the application that you want," said Amit Mital, the corporate vice president in charge of Microsoft's "unlimited potential" unit, which focuses on emerging markets. "We use very intelligent and sophisticated caching. The rest of it sits in the cloud."

Microsoft has been working on OneApp for the past year and a half, noting that there are hundreds of millions of feature phones in emerging markets, most of which aren't being used to run software.

"People have used them just for voice and SMS" (Short Message Service), Mital said. "What we want to do is unlock their power so they can be used from a broader set of services and applications."

The move comes as Microsoft is also struggling to keep up in the smartphone race against heightened competition from the likes of Apple, Google, Research In Motion, and others. Microsoft said that OneApp is separate from its Windows Mobile efforts.

Mital stressed that OneApp is an adjunct to Windows Mobile, which is still the company's bet for smartphones, and is largely aimed at emerging markets, rather than developed ones.

OneApp is Microsoft's plan for developing markets for the here and now. Longer-term, Microsoft has been exploring a concept called "phone plus," in which a smartphone could be plugged into a television and keyboard to act as a sort of basic computer.

With OneApp, Microsoft will find itself competing against applications written for Sun's J2ME.

Mital said that the big advantage of OneApp is that programs written for it should run on most OneApp-enabled phones, something he said is often not the case with Java.

"If you build an app for one phone it may or may not work on another phone," Mital said. "The development cost is extremely excessive. You go through the development cycle over and over. That is just debilitating."

For now, Microsoft is working directly with select partners to develop OneApp, but eventually Microsoft plans to release a software development kit to allow others to write their own OneApp programs. Programs for OneApp can be written using tools like XML and JavaScript, Mital said. "The world does not need another new programming paradigm. We were very determined to use existing programming paradigms."

In addition to Blue Label Telecoms, which is launching shortly, Mital said that Microsoft hopes to announce one or two more carriers using OneApp before the end of the year.

Although there are plenty of feature phones still shipping in developed markets, such as the United States and Europe, Mital said Microsoft is focusing on emerging markets.

"Right now my team is extremely focused on emerging markets," Mital said. "There's literally billions of customers in these markets."

3D Camera to go on sale

3D cameras first went on sale over 100 years ago, but there is now a digital consumer version available for around £570. This Fuji 3D W1 will allow you to take 3D (stereo) photographs in a compact point and shoot camera. You can even view it in real 3D using the lenticular LCD on the back of the camera (or send it off for printing on lenticulated paper).

"The FinePix REAL 3D W1 camera looks like a normal digital camera, but it has two lenses and two sensors, which take an image of the foreground and the background of any picture.

A processor within the camera then blends the two images together to create a "image that jumps out at you", according to Theo Georghiades, the digital product manager at FujiFilm.

People can see the image in a number of ways. They can either view it on an 2.8 inch screen on the back of the camera, or they can buy a special 8 inch digital photo frame that can display the videos or pictures. This special viewer will cost about £390."

No More Windows 7 E

Instead Microsoft will rely on users to make their decision about which browser they want to run on the firm’s Vista successor by using a ballot screen.

However, Redmond has made this move without the consent of the EC, whose investigations into the software vendor’s business practices rumble on."

Three men indicted in largest U.S. data breach

Two Russians and a Florida man were charged on Monday with hacking into Heartland Payment Systems, 7-Eleven, and the Hannaford Brothers supermarket chain, and stealing data related to more than 130 million credit and debit cards.

The indictment names 28-year-old Albert Gonzalez of Miami, who already has been charged with stealing data related to 40 million credit cards from eight major retailers, including TJ Maxx, and two unnamed co-conspirators based in Russia.

The breach involving Heartland and the others is believed to be the largest hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice. In addition to Heartland, 7-Eleven, and Hannaford Brothers, it involves two unnamed corporate victims, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office.

The three men were indicted on charges of conspiring to hack into computer networks and stealing data as far back as October 2006. Gonzalez, whose aliases include "segvec" and "soupnazi," and the others allegedly found victims on a list of Fortune 500 companies and visited retail locations to see what type of checkout systems they used.

They used an SQL injection attack to steal the data and used computers in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Latvia, Ukraine, and the Netherlands for storing malware and stolen data and launching attacks, according to the indictment. In an SQL injection attack, a small malicious script is inserted, exploiting a vulnerability in the database layer of an application that feeds information to the Web site.

They also allegedly installed backdoors and sniffers to intercept data in real time as it was processed by the victims and tried to hide their actions by accessing the victim networks through proxy computers, modifying their software so as to evade detection by antivirus programs and programming it to delete traces of the malware from victim networks, according to the indictment.

The men also tried to sell the stolen data to others, the indictment alleges. They are charged with conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers, commit fraud in connection with computers and damage computers, as well as conspiracy to commit wire fraud. They face up to 35 years in prison as well as a fine of $1.25 million.

Gonzalez, who is in federal custody, was charged in May 2008 in New York with hacking the computer network of Dave & Buster's restaurant chain and was named in an indictment in Massachusetts in August 2008 related to the TJX breach . Other alleged victims in those cases include BJ's Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever 21, and DSW. He faces trial on the New York charges next month.

Heartland reported the breach on presidential Inauguration Day in January and said that although it occurred last year, it found evidence of the intrusion just the week prior.

Formerly a federal government informant, Gonzalez also was arrested in New Jersey in 2003 on charges related to ATM and debit card fraud.

BlackBerry Storm 2 stars in a photoshoot, Wi-Fi confirmed

Today's forecast: cloudy with intermittent leaks of BlackBerry Storm 2 photos. This time it's the Vodafone Germany's version - the 9520. The good news is that it has Wi-Fi too, like it's Verizon-headed counterpart - the 9550 Storm 2 (and Euro 3G, of course).

It shares its looks with it too, which of course means it's a chip of the old block - the 9500 Storm. This one runs the 5.0 version of the BlackBerry OS, unlike the 9550 Storm 2 we saw in July, which had 5.1.

As you can see the Storm 2 still has a chubby exterior but at least the other gripe we had with the original - lack of Wi-Fi has been fixed. And the new screen has us holding our breaths - it isn't clicky when the phone is off, but is clicky when it's on. How does that work and is it better than the original?

Over a million Ovi Mail accounts created in just eight months

Nokia has just announced that the millionth Ovi Mail account has been activated only eight months after the service started in December 2008. Reportedly, what makes the service so popular is the quick and easy email account setup straight from the phone without the need of a computer.

To prove that Nokia statistics show that 650 000 of those 1 million users have created their accounts from their mobile devices.

Unlike some other Ovi services, using Ovi Mail is completely free. If you haven't heard of it before=, that's because the service is targeted at developing countries where access to a personal computer is not as common as elsewhere.

The Ovi Mail service is accessible not only using the smarter half of Nokia's portfolio (namely the numerous S60 smartphones) but also by the more affordable S40 devices.

Another reason for the huge success of Ovi Mail is its availability in more than 180 countries (like India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa, which round up the top five for Ovi Mail subscribers) and the localization in 20 languages.

Well now, could it be possible that besides being the world's Top 1 digicam seller (as a side effect of pushing great numbers of camera-equipped phones world-wide), Nokia would also take a place among the leading email service providers? Only time will show. Gmail, beware. Ovi Mail is coming!

Remember the Sony Ericsson Jalou? Well, the photo may have been a fake, but the Jalou is the real deal. It's a fashion phone with a jewel-inspired design and with a limited Dolce&Gabbana edition just around the corner.

The Jalou is a petite clamshell - just 73 mm tall when closed - and weighs the handbag-friendly 84 grams. The internal display has a special finish that allows it to double as a mirror - how thoughtful! Jalou will be available in attractive gem colors like Onyx Black, Aquamarine Blue and Deep Amethyst.

Microsoft and Nokia announce close cooperation, Office Mobile comes to Nokia smartphones

This rumor has been circulating around for a while but now it is as official as it gets: Microsoft Office Mobile is coming to Nokia smartphones. This and other mobile productivity and connectivity solutions are the direct result of the global alliance between the two giants, which was announced today.

No, Nokia don't have any plans of making a Windows Mobile device any time soon. As of today the two companies will start working together on the design, development and marketing of diverse productivity solutions. Target users of the new products will be the corporate users who will appreciate them most. So, it's not a surprise that the first products to incorporate them will be the members of the renowned E-series.

This might sound strange at first to some but a second look at the written above reveals that this alliance does not only plan to bring the Microsoft Office Mobile to the Symbian powered smartphones (in fact, Quickoffice already does it quite successfully), but also to add new and useful mobile professional solutions.

As of next year Nokia should start shipping the Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on its smartphones with plans to widen the range of apps in the future.

So, what can we actually expect from that alliance? Here is a clue:

Introducing eSATA… Kind of

eSATA and USB combined: Our test motherboard offers an eSATA port, which also has USB 2.0 connectors in order to provide device power.

eSATA is a physically-modified interpretation of Serial ATA, optimized for external devices. The connectors are slightly different, and the minimum voltage levels are increased to ensure reliable operation. Depending on the SATA controller, eSATA supports either 1.5 Gbit/s or 3 Gbit/s operation, resulting in 150 and 300 MB/s bandwidth using 8/10-bit encoding. The practical limitations are the maximum cable length of 2 meters, and controller support via your operating system—devices using the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) are the most flexible. eSATA is much faster than USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s) or FireWire 1394a and 1394b (400/800 Mbit/s).

On May 25, the SATA IO (SATA International Organization) released revision 3.0 of the SATA specification, which doubles throughput from 3 to 6 Gbit/s (600 MB/s). The new spec lets you continue using existing cables, but the SATA IO recommends high-quality cabling for the sake of data integrity and performance. SATA 3.0 also introduces a low insertion force (LIF) connector for consumer devices, and modifications to command queuing: NCQ Queue Management allows altering the order of pending commands, while NCQ Streaming utilizes this feature to optimize for isochronous transfers. However, SATA 3.0 still does not address power over SATA (eSATAp), and it does not yet include 6 Gbit/s transfers for external devices. Hence eSATA will remain at 300 MB/s for a while, and without the ability to supply power through the data port.

eSATA Utilizes USB to Power External Devices

Of course, the interim solution for external devices is to get power in some other way. Using an external power supply would not make a lot of sense for thumb drives, which are meant to be ultra portable. Hence the only solution lies in accessing existing interfaces such as USB 2.0. All three eSATA drives we reviewed are combo drives, meaning that they support either eSATA or USB 2.0 through different interfaces. All three utilize JMicron’s JMB362 controller, which supports both standards. If you connect USB 2.0 first, the drive will establish a SATA connection and use USB 2.0 for power and data. To use eSATA you have to plug in that connector first, and create a USB 2.0 connection using a dedicated USB 2.0 cable to get power to the unit.

The MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard we used to test the devices offers an enhanced eSATA stick with additional pins for USB 2.0 power supply, which the three eSATA drives support. Although this is not specified by the SATA IO, the approach worked fine during our testing.

Thumb Drives: Introducing 128 GB USB And High-Speed eSATA

Thumb drives are extremely versatile, and they’ve reached capacities large enough to store all of your personal data on one ultra-portable device. In addition, many different flavors exist, including drives that are waterproof, have ruggedized casings, or are extremely small; all of these choices make thumb drives even more attractive. Thumb drives are now going to the next level, reaching 128 GB capacities and introducing eSATA as an interface alternative to USB 2.0. We gave several models a try to see how they fare.

Speed vs. Capacity

eSATA may seem like overkill for a portable storage device, but USB 2.0’s 35 MB/s effective maximum throughput results in a lot of waiting around when you need to store many gigabytes of data onto a high-capacity thumb drive. Effective throughput is lower than the gross maximum figure, and in addition, write performance is typically lower than read speeds as well. The fact that large 32 and 64 GB drives tend to be even slower makes things worse.

Waiting for USB 3.0

Considering how long it takes to fill a higher-capacity, USB 2.0 thumb drive with data—30 minutes in an ideal scenario for 64 GB—it definitely makes sense to equip high-performance drives with a faster interface, such as USB 3.0, which is on schedule to be integrated into next-generation platforms in 2010. The first controllers are available in small quantities, but it will take until next year until USB 3.0 has its breakthrough.

Until then, eSATA may be an option. We looked at three thumb drives by Maxell, OCZ, and Silicon Power that are equipped with eSATA interfaces, and we also decided to add the first 128 GB USB 2.0 thumb drive by Kingston.

AMD: SB750 Southbridge On The 790FX Chipset

The SB750 has been AMD’s flagship southbridge since last year, when it was released together with the 700-series chipset family. This lineup consists of the discrete graphics chipsets 740, 770, 790X, and 790FX as well as the integrated parts 740G, 780G, 785G, and 790GX with its Side Port graphics memory option.

All discrete graphics chipsets are manufactured using a 65 nm process, while all of the integrated solutions with DirectX 10 (and DX10.1) compatible IGPs are etched at 55 nm. Low-end chipset configurations are typically paired with the older SB600 or SB700/SB710 southbridge components, but we’d recommend to go for the SB750 when possible. The SB750 offers six SATA/300 ports with AHCI support and AMD’s RAIDXpert technology, which supports RAID 0, 1, 1+0, and 5, as well as JBOD. The RAIDXpert tool has to be used through a browser-based interface, which allows for administration and monitoring of your RAID array. It cannot extend arrays across additional controllers.

The SB800 will most likely be introduced together with the next-generation platform based on the AMD 800-series chipsets.

Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5F

We used an enthusiast motherboard by Gigabyte, the MA790FXT-UD5P. The board utilizes AMD's 790FX/SB750 chipset combination and accepts all Socket AM3 processors and DDR3 memory.

Although the chipset supports six SATA/300 ports, Gigabyte decided to add more storage options through a JMicron JM322 controller. This provides four additional SATA/300 ports (see white connectors) that are totally independent from the chipset’s SATA ports. The JMicron ports only support RAID 0 and 1, but they can also be used for Gigabyte’s Smart Backup feature.

This motherboard’s I/O panel is full of connectors, including eight USB 2.0 ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, audio jacks, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, and audio. But it does not offer eSATA connectivity. However, Gigabyte includes an eSATA slot adapter, providing two eSATA ports should you need them.

All chipsets today offer integrated Serial ATA (SATA) support, since all mainstream hard drives now utilize the fast serial interface. Even entry-level chipsets tend to support the creation of striped sets (RAID 0) or mirrors (RAID 1) to accelerate storage performance or improve data protection.

Upper-mainstream and high-end products not only offer more SATA ports but also added software-based functionality, such as RAID 5. Japanese scientist have shown how the human body glows with visible light. The quantity of light emitted is 1000 times too dim for our eyes to see, but the researchers imaged the glow with special cameras. The light is tied to metabolism, suggesting that measuring it could have medical applications, says Tohoku Institute of Technology scientist Masaki Kobayashi. In fact, virtually all living creatures emit very weak light, which is thought to be a byproduct of biochemical reactions involving free radicals.

(This visible light differs from the infrared radiation -- an invisible form of light -- that comes from body heat.)

To learn more about this faint visible light, scientists in Japan employed extraordinarily sensitive cameras capable of detecting single photons. Five healthy male volunteers in their 20s were placed bare-chested in front of the cameras in complete darkness in light-tight rooms for 20 minutes every three hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for three days.

The researchers found the body glow rose and fell over the day, with its lowest point at 10 a.m. and its peak at 4 p.m., dropping gradually after that. These findings suggest there is light emission linked to our body clocks, most likely due to how our metabolic rhythms fluctuate over the course of the day.

ATi has unveiled its anticipated Radeon HD 3800 series, a new chipset that promises better performance for the mid-range as well as new graphics features. The line bucks the trend of reserving new visuals for high-end cards by introducing support for Microsoft's upcoming DirectX 10.1 (and according OpenGL 2.0 features) and its enhanced features, such as high dynamic color range for lighting and improved anti-aliasing effects. The Radeon HD 3870 switches to a double-slot size but is clocked at a minimum 775MHz and doubles the amount of memory to 512MB at a faster 2.25GHz. ATI is releasing the cards as a Windows upgrade both under its own name and with third-party manufacturers at prices of $179 and $219 respectively. Support for other operating systems has not yet been mentioned but is expected.

Want something different from your regular cellphone? Something that performs the function of a traditional mobile phone and yet is packed some non-traditional phone features? How about the Garmin-Asus collaborative product called the nuvifone G60 which is scheduled to be released on July 27 in Singapore and perhaps in the U.S. soon - this new mobile boast of three main functions dubbed - call, search and view map.

The Garmin-Asus nuvifone G60 integrates navigation and location based services, and is being touted as an all-in-one, LBS-centric touchscreen phone, mobile web browser and personal navigator. The phone’s main screen is highlighted by three primary icons namely, “call”, “search”, and “view map.” It allows users to scroll through the other icons just by swiping their fingers across the displays. It also has a built-in accelerometer that lets every screen to be viewed in either portrait or landscape navigation.

The view map feature lets users receive turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions to millions of destinations powered by preloaded maps of North America, Eastern and Western Europe some specific regions in Asia and the Pacific. The phone has a real GPS receiver with hotfix. This is in addition to the A-GPS (assisted GPS) that the phone has. Making the phone even more useful is the fact that it is preloaded with millions of points of interest or POIs which is useful for navigation purposes.

Other features of the Garmin-Asus nuvifone G60 include - “where am I” for location exact latitude and longitude coordinates of the user’s location.

If the Panda SafeCD finds a more recent pav.sig than the one included in the ISO, it will use the more updated one.

For a more recently updated signature database file download pav.sig from this blog. Remember this signature file is for tests only and updated on a "whenever-I-feel-like-it" basis, so it should not be used for production systems. For critical situations and to disinfect production systems use our regular signature file which gets updated at least once a day.

Nvidia Develops Interactive Ray-Tracing Engine for Graphics Chips.

Nvidia Corp. unveiled at Siggraph conference the industry’s first interactive ray-tracing engine that utilizes graphics processing units (GPUs). The Optix engine is aimed at professional applications and is currently compatible with Nvidia’s Quadro FX professional graphics solutions. Potentially, this means that applications based on the engine will also have limited compatibility.

Nvidia Optix engine is a programmable ray tracing pipeline enabling software developers to easily bring new levels of realism to their applications using traditional C programming. According to the developer, the Optix engine greatly accelerates the ray tracing used across a spectrum of disciplines, including: photorealistic rendering, automotive styling, acoustical design, optics simulation, volume calculations and radiation research. Application developers may use the Optix engine to redefine what’s possible for designers, engineers and researchers.

At present ray tracing engines rely in central processing units and a lot of them are not intended to be interactive, but are tailored to provide the best possible image quality. Nvidia’s Optix is an interactive engine that uses GPUs, thus, may be potentially faster than competing ray tracing engines available today.

Currently Nvidia’s engine is only aimed at professional applications, not video games, hence, the company decided to limit compatibility of its Optix to Quadro FX GPUs. It remains to be seen whether developers of non-proprietary professional graphics software attempt to utilize proprietary ray tracing engine with limited hardware compatibility.

Nvidia Optix engine will be available in fall 2009.

WD launches a 1TB 2.5" Hard Drive

Western Digital informed us this morning that it had begun shipping 2.5" mobile hard drives with capacities of 1TB and 750GB, which is an industry first. The Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drive sports an impressive three 333GB platters spinning at 5,200 RPM. Each drive comes with 8MB of cache and a 3Gb/s Serial ATA interface. WD claims acoustic levels of 24-26 dB(A) depending on idle and load conditions. Power consumption numbers are at SSD levels with quoted figures of 0.10W at idle and 2.5W during normal read/write operation.

The one drawback for either drive is that both utilize the 12.5mm form factor instead of the de facto standard 9.5mm. This means the drives are ideally suited for external storage solutions, larger DTR notebook designs, or small form factor desktop systems. However, your mileage will vary depending on the design of your notebook.

The Scorpio Blue 750GB (WD7500KEVT) is "available now through select distributors/resellers" with an MSRP of $189.99. The 1TB Scorpio Blue (WD10TEVT) is also available today, but configured into the My Passport Essential SE Portable USB drive product series. It will be shipping to the retail channel in the near future with an estimated MSRP of $249.99. Each drive carries a limited three-year warranty. We have review samples on the way and will look at their performance in an external enclosure and SFF setup shortly.

ASUS P7P55D Deluxe - Pictorial Preview

Another day, another P55 motherboard preview although technically it is just a pictorial preview due to NDA requirements. I know, this is fast becoming a been there, done that event as it seems only ASUS and Gigabyte are currently previewing boards. However, this should change as MSI, ASRock, EVGA, Biostar, and even ECS have some interesting products that we hope to provide early coverage on shortly. Like me, you are probably wondering when all of this will end and we can get straight to the numbers, technology, and features of the P55 motherboards. Honestly, even that date is under NDA, but just bear with us for a few more weeks.

ASUS will have one of (if not) the widest range of product offerings based on the P55 chipset at launch. They will cover the gamut from entry level motherboards featuring the PRO series, to the mid-range with the EVO branding, then stepping up to the high end with the Deluxe products, and finally addressing the enthusiast sector with the ROG series. Final pricing is not yet available but based on chipset pricing and market conditions, expect to see P55 boards starting at $120 and topping out around $239 at launch.

ASUS was kind enough to visit with us last week and we had the opportunity to play with the P7P55D Deluxe motherboard. All we can say right now is that this motherboard deserves to be on the top of your wish list at product launch. This particular motherboard features ASUS' Xtreme Design initiative. This technology consists of their Turbo V, Turbo Key, Xtreme Phase, Anti-EMI, and StackCool 3+ features that we will outline in detail at product launch. Overall, the most impressive part of the package for the enthusiast will be the updated Turbo V application and improved PWM design. It certainly shows on this board with Bclks easily hitting the 245+ range along with memory clocking above 2500MHz.

Board Layout

Taking a quick look around this board, we find the overall layout is excellent and designed with CrossFire X or SLI users in mind or those who value expansion capabilities over multi-GPU performance. ASUS utilizes the VIA VT6308P chipset for IEEE 1394a support, VIA VT2020 (BD192/24 ENVY HD) 10-channel HD audio codec (8+2 Streaming) with support for DTS Surround Sensation, and the Realtek 8112L/8110SC Gigabit LAN controllers for LAN operation including support for AI NET2. Why manufacturers will not utilize the native Intel Gigabit LAN support in the P55 is beyond us.

The VIA VT2020 actually provides nice onboard audio support with better output quality (subjective) than the standard Realtek ALC888/889 series. If the drivers come up to speed, we will have another competitive choice in on-board audio after ADI pulled out of the market last year. The board also features 14 USB 2.0 ports (six headers/ eight ports on the I/O panel) and support for up to 16GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory with standard BIOS support up to DDR3-2133. ASUS also included power-on/reset/clear CMOS switches for the open bench crowd.

There are several features located in the memory slot area. First off, the memory slots feature ASUS' Q-DIMM single latch module technology that allows the video card to be placed along the edge of the memory slots without installation headaches. ASUS continues to offer their MemOK! technology that will reset the memory timings to safe values in case the user settings are too aggressive causing the system not to POST. While it sounds impressive, we have yet to need it as the BIOS recovery system will typically kick in and reset the board to stock values correctly.

The OV DRAM, OV IMC, and OV CPU switches lets the user override the BIOS limits on these settings, which are already more than high enough to void warranties or damage your CPU. However, for those needing that extra voltage, these switches could come into play for extreme overclocks.

The P7P55D Deluxe features six (light blue) SATA 3Gb/s ports provided by the P55 chipset that feature RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 support along with Intel’s new version 9 Matrix Storage technology. The dark blue and white SATA connectors are powered by the JMicron JMB322 3Gb/s SATA chipset that features their Drive Xpert Technology for instant backup and simultaneous access to data with twin drives. The black SATA 3Gb/s port and IDE port are provided by the JMicron JMB363 chipset. The Marvell 6G chipset was originally scheduled for this board but has been removed until Marvell sorts their problems out.

The board features two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots, two PCI slots, and three PCIe 2.0 x16 slots (x16/x4 or x8/x8/x4). The x4 PCIe slot is provided by the P55 chipset and is not designed for optimal graphic’s performance. In fact, NVIDIA has pulled SLI support for this slot and we expect AMD to do the same for CrossFire X due to performance reasons. The layout of the PCI/PCIe slots is very good and allows for a single PCIe x1, PCIe x4, and PCI slot when running SLI or CrossFire.

The CPU area is uncluttered for the most part and a push/pull CPU fan/heatsink design like the Vigor Monsoon III will not interfere with low-rise (heatsinks) memory in the first DIMM slot. The back of the board is clean and we expect various air/water coolers that require a back plate to work fine. What we would like to see is Socket 775 mounting holes on this board as an option as yet another socket change is wearing thin on us. ASUS is utilizing a 16-phase power system that has allowed easy 245+ Bclk rates in early testing. For the more extreme overlcocking crowd, the capacitors around the CPU socket could present problems, but this is a trend we have noticed with all P55 boards to date.

The rear panel features the standard PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, optical/coaxial S/PDIF out ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, dual Gigabit LAN ports, IEEE 1394a port, audio panel, and a handy Clear CMOS switch.

The remote control unit is part of the Turbo V package included with the board. At this time it allows you to utilize three presets to auto overclock your platform by 3% to 7% or setup saved profiles that you have created. Also, Bclk rates can be changed in real time. We tried this with 3DMark Vantage running and other applications without a problem. The EPU engine can also be manipulated in real time with this device.

DDR3 On A Budget: Six 6 GB Memory Kits

Have DDR3 prices finally hit rock bottom? DDR3-1600 reached $30 per 2 GB module several weeks ago, making it completely competitive in price-per-performance with DDR2. Available in both dual-channel and triple-channel kits for $60 and $90, these aren't last year’s high-voltage parts, but instead completely modern 1.50-1.65 V modules, fully compatible with Core i7, Phenom II socket AM3, and future Core i5 platforms.

But those were June's prices, and several of the modules that qualified for our “sub-$100 triple-channel roundup” have since gone up to as much as $130. Meanwhile, prices for the DDR2 that still competes for attention in AM2+ and LGA 775 platforms have remained relatively flat. A few of today’s contenders haven’t yet been hit by the higher cost bug, but we see it as only a matter of time before the cheapest models get more expensive or the more expensive models get cheaper. Either move will result in all six sets once again settling into the same price class.

Today’s comparison is about value, so the products lagging behind the upward pricing trend have a distinct advantage no matter how long it lasts. With daily updates logistically difficult, tomorrow’s readers should instead find our test data far more useful than any value conclusions when using future prices.

Value for us is defined by how much performance we can extract from a part, rather than how much it’s specified to provide. Overclocking and under-latency test results are thus more significant to us than rated settings, yet some people refuse to overclock by a greater amount than specified by the module manufacturer. Here’s a short list of how today’s samples are marketed.

X58 On A Budget: Seven Sub-$200 Core i7 Boards

Sometimes it pays to be patient. When Intel’s high-end Core i7 processors burst onto the scene last fall, motherboards that supported them were both expensive and relatively less mature than they are today. As a consequence of the top-down approach many vendors used in introducing X58, shipping their most-expensive products first, buyers willing to sacrifice a few features will sometimes find that the newest mainstream parts are less troublesome than high-end predecessors.

We saw this type of maturation between last winter’s $300+ X58 motherboard roundup and this spring’s $200-300 follow up, and we expected further progress in small items such as BIOS implementation for today’s planned sub-$200 comparison. But something happened to alter our plan: prices slowly crept back up.

Extended stability tests for overclocking lead to weeks of testing in a seven-motherboard roundup, but prices don’t stop fluctuating during that time. Recent increases in the price of several models would have excluded two of today’s products from a sub-$200 roundup had those increases occurred before testing began. One company had even given us a choice between two models, and the board we chose went over the limit while the other did not. Forced to add a caveat to our “sub-$200” title, we’ve kept an eagle’s eye on value in these sensibly-priced parts.

GeForce GTX 285 Gets 2 GB: Gigabyte's GV-N285OC-2GI

Big memory capacity hasn’t always been specific to the highest-end graphics cards. It's actually still fairly common for vendors to put a bunch of inexpensive, low-speed memory on entry-level boards, hoping that big number would register as better performance to the folks who haven't yet wrapped their heads around the idea that a big frame buffer is of limited use to an underpowered GPU. The uninitiated would readily jump for the “better” specification they knew, rather than the faster graphics processor they didn't understand as well.

But gamers have since become better-educated with respect to hardware, and many of today’s mainstream cards use fewer of the same expensive memory components as their high-end counterparts. For mainstream and better parts, the economic incentive to expand the memory capacities of low-end cards is almost gone.

More recently, the industry has seen an explosion in both graphics processing and system demands, with games becoming increasingly complicated and gorgeous 30" displays supporting 2560x1600 pixel resolutions. Putting aside marketing tricks of the past, the high end just might be where memory really needs to expand.

You won’t find a higher-end graphics processor than Nvidia's GeForce GTX 285, and that’s why Gigabyte chose it as the first model to support two gigabytes of super-fast GDDR3-2400 memory. Hints of a custom design are seen in its combination of HDMI and VGA connections, rather than a fistful of adapters, and bold claims of a “2 ounce Copper Inner Layer” for its circuit board.

Spreading the VGA and DVI outputs across two connections rather than relying on a second DVI-I interface and adapters eliminated the space Nvidia’s reference design used for its S-Video/Composite combo interface. That’s no big loss to most of us, since those legacy TV outputs were only able to support ultra-low resolutions. Anyone putting this much effort into gaming on a home-theater display should certainly have HDMI, or at least DVI by now.

Gigabyte’s custom circuit board doesn’t look much different than the reference-design cards we’ve seen, though Gigabyte claims slight improvements in its voltage regulator components.

Hynix’s super-fast H5RS1H23MFR-N2C 1Gb GDDR3-2400 memory is clocked at its rated speed, though Gigabyte does overclock the GeForce GTX 285 GPU slightly to 660 MHz, compared to the standard 648 MHz. Unlike Gigabyte’s card, reference models also underclock RAM to a 2,322 MHz data rate.

ASRock Announces Two 785G Products

The AMD 785G has been available for sale off and on over the past few weeks along with product previews at various sites. Our preview was short as driver and BIOS problems kept us from providing additional detail on the chipset capabilities. We originally expected the launch date to be in late August but it is "officially" launching in a few days. As such, we have been busy testing this small wonder of silicon with a variety of driver sets since our first boards arrived earlier in the month.

Unfortunately, right up until the last driver release on Wednesday, testing has not been as smooth as we expected for a chipset that is more evolutionary than revolutionary. However, the final pieces of the puzzle are coming together now as we work on the initial chipset review and then an extensive motherboard roundup featuring several boards expected to be available on launch day or shortly thereafter.

BIOS releases are also coming at a fast and furious pace as final tuning adjustments are completed with C1E/CnQ and core unlocking capabilities at the top of the refinement list. Gigabyte and ASUS provided their first samples earlier this month and then we started to wonder if other products would be available on the new launch date. Fortunately, products from a variety of suppliers started arriving late this week with more to come early next week. Exactly what products will be available at launch is something we will discuss in the 785G article.

In the meantime, ASRock is introducing two 785G motherboards today. The M3A785GXH/128M features an ATX design equipped with the SB710 Southbridge, 16GB of DDR3 support, 128MB of DDR3 SidePort memory, three PCIe x16 slots (x16/x4 or x8,x8,x4), single PCIe x1 slot, and two PCI slots. The usual assortment of Gigabit LAN, 8-channel HD audio, AOD/ACC functions, HDMI/DVI/VGA output, and six SATA 3Gb/s ports are included.

The M3A785GMH/128M features a uATX design that is equipped with similar specifications to its ATX sibling. The primary difference being the layout with a single x16 PCIe 2.0 slot, single PCIe x1 slot, and two PCI slots. Both boards fully support ASRock’s Instant Boot, EZ OC, and IES technologies. They are also EuP (Energy using Product) and Windows 7 hardware ready. We will have a full review of both boards in early August.

INQ Mobile Launches Two New Social Mobile Phones

INQ Mobile, the company behind the INQ1 social mobile phone, launched its second and third devices today dubbed the Mini 3G and the INQ Chat 3G.

Both of the phones run on a customized BREW operating system which the company calls INQ System 1. Neither are smart phones, and the company says it’s targeting a different audience: one that wants an inexpensive, but solid, “social mobile” device.

INQ Chat 3G

The INQ Chat 3G sports a full QWERTY “bloke proof” keyboard, a 2.4-inch display, a 3.2MP auto-focus camera, GPS, and integration with Facebook, Skype, Twitter, and Windows Live. You can place widgets for some of the social networks, like Facebook, on the home screen and they will update in real-time with your friend’s status updates. It also features an INQ customized push-GMail application.

You can also sync the device with your computer–and even to iTunes–using a “DoubleTwist” sync application that was created by DVD Jon, the guy who worked to break DVD encryption. INQ says you can add up to 4GB microSD cards to store your media on.

INQ Mini 3G

The INQ Mini 3G is a second 3G device which sports a similar widget-based operating system. It features a smaller 2.2 inch display, a 2MP camera, and supports microSD cards up to 4GB in size. INQ says it spent a lot of time working on the balance of the device so that it’s easy to use with just one hand. Like the INQ Chat 3G, it will sport the INQ icon carousel at the bottom of the screen.

A Brief Hands-On

We had a chance to play with both devices last week and were impressed by the attention to detail INQ put into both phones. Both look like premium devices, but come with budget friendly price tags. You can also purchase new back covers for each in a variety of colors (blue, green, pink, yellow, etc.) to customize the device for your taste at the time of purchase. You can use both phones as modems simply by plugging them in to your computer using a USB cord.

Roll out Plans

Both phones will launch on the wireless carrier 3 in the UK in the fourth quarter. INQ does not currently have an official US launch plan at this time, but we’d love to see them here within the next few years.

Europe's net refuseniks revealed

Young people lead the charge onto the internet across Europe

One third of Europeans have never used the net, according to an EU report.

The study, which examined the region's digital landscape over the last five years, also revealed that more than one in four Europeans had never used a PC.

More than one in three of the digital refuseniks said they did not see the need for a connection while nearly one quarter said they could not afford it.

People above the age of 65 and the unemployed were the least active online, it said.

However, the study also revealed that in 2008 56% of Europeans had become regular internet users, up one third since 2004.

More than 80% of those now have a high-speed internet connection, compared to one third in 2004. Most of these had download speeds greater than 2 megabits per second (Mbps) it showed.

Countries such as Latvia and Estonia lead the web 2.0 charge with higher proportions of their populations uploading home made digital content to web sites than in any of the other 25 states in the survey.

Young people across the European Union have led the charge on to the net, it revealed.

Nearly 70% of people under the age of 24 use the internet every day, compared to the EU average of 43%.

But this same group is reluctant to pay to download or use online content, such as music or video, with 33% saying that they would not pay anything at all.

"These young people are intensive internet users and are also highly demanding consumers," said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

"To release the economic potential of these 'digital natives', we must make access to digital content an easy and fair game."
